Mars glowing ember-red in a starry night sky, a golden retrograde loop arcing back toward the constellation Leo

The short version

  • Mars is retrograde from January 10 to April 1, 2027 — the first Mars retrograde in two years. It stops at 10°25′ Virgo (Jan 10, 13:41 UTC — 8:41 AM in New York), backs into Leo on February 21, and turns direct at 20°55′ Leo (Apr 1, 13:04 UTC — 9:04 AM in New York).
  • The retrograde itself lasts 80 days, 23 hours and 23 minutes — 37 minutes short of 81 days. The full cycle is much longer: the pre-shadow opened November 5, 2026 and the post-shadow closes June 8, 2027. End to end: 215 days.
  • Two acts. Act I (Jan 10 – Feb 21, in Virgo) audits the engine: routine, work, health, effort. Act II (Feb 21 – Apr 1, in Leo) asks why the engine runs at all: desire, pride, joy, and whose life the work is actually for.
  • The hinge week is the heart of it: Mars squares Uranus on Feb 17, reaches opposition — its biggest and brightest appearance until 2029 — on Feb 19, the penumbral lunar eclipse lands beside it in Virgo on Feb 20, and Mars backs into Leo on Feb 21.
  • It comes paired with Jupiter: Mars and Jupiter shake hands in Leo on November 16, 2026, both spend the winter in review, and both station direct 12 days apart in April — Mars on April 1 at 20°55′ Leo, Jupiter on April 13 at 17°01′ Leo. The clean relaunch window is April 13 – May 14, 2027.
  • If any of your planets sits between 20°55′ Leo and 10°25′ Virgo — or squares or opposes that stretch — this one is personal. The checker below reads it off your birth date, and also tells you whether you were born with Mars retrograde (about 1 person in 11 was).
  • Your rehearsal: the last Mars retrograde ran December 6, 2024 to February 23, 2025 and started in Leo, at 6°, before backing out of the sign into Cancer. This one is the mirror: it starts in Virgo and backs into Leo. Same fire sign, opposite door.

Here is a small mercy: unlike Jupiter's December 12-versus-13 station, every ephemeris on the internet agrees that Mars stops on January 10, 2027. What almost none of them tell you is the minute (13:41 UTC), the shadow that opened two months earlier (November 5), or the single most important structural fact of this retrograde: it changes signs in the middle. Roughly the first half happens in Virgo and the second half — including the ending, the degree where Mars finally turns direct — happens in Leo. If you read "Mars retrograde in Virgo, January 10 to April 1" and stopped there, you got the trailer, not the film.

This guide is the film. Every date below is computed to the minute — stations, shadows, ingresses, the aspects that bracket them — in UTC and US Eastern, with the one clock change of the window handled. Then the parts almost nobody publishes: the two-act structure that makes this retrograde readable, the hinge week of February 17–21, the Jupiter pairing that turns the whole 2026–27 winter into a relay, the December 2024 echo you can mine for clues, the two houses it audits for your rising sign, and a calculator that checks your own chart against the exact degrees instead of asking you to trust a table of dates copied between websites.

One thing to settle before anything else, because it is the first thing everyone asks: Mars retrograde is not Mercury retrograde with more shouting. Mercury retrograde is a three-week logistics outage — emails, trains, contracts. Mars retrograde is an eleven-week energy audit that arrives once every two years, and its subject is not your inbox but your engine: drive, desire, anger, stamina, the will to keep pushing at the things you push at. It breaks almost nothing. It re-prices effort. And it is common enough to be nobody's fault: Mars is retrograde about 9% of all days — we clocked it at 9.3% between 2000 and 2030 — so roughly one person in eleven was born during one, including, very likely, someone you rely on completely.

The complete timeline (UTC and US Eastern)

Dates in the wild are usually given in one time zone, rounded to the day. Here is the whole cycle in both references, to the minute. Eastern times carry the clock changes: US daylight saving ends November 1, 2026 (so everything from the shadow onward is EST until March 14, 2027, when it springs forward again — the only clock change inside the retrograde itself).

A detail we enjoy more than we should: Mercury stations direct on March 3 at 20°55′ Aquarius — the same degree and arc-minute, on the opposite side of the sky, where Mars will station direct on April 1 (20°55′ Leo). The two planets that spent February retrograde together end their reviews on mirrored degrees, four weeks apart.

Does this retrograde touch your chart? (and were you born with Mars retrograde?)

Enter your birth date. The time and time zone only matter if you were born within a few hours of Mars changing sign or direction — which is rare, given that even at top speed Mars covers about two-thirds of a degree a day — so don't worry if you don't know them. Nothing is stored, nothing is emailed.

What it checks: your natal Mars (position, direct or retrograde, stationary or not), your natal Venus and Mercury as a bonus, and whether any planet from the Sun to Pluto sits inside the retrograde zone — 20°55′ Leo to 10°25′ Virgo — or squares or opposes it, with a 2° orb. For every contact it gives the exact dates Mars crosses that degree, usually three passes spread across nine months. The Moon and Ascendant need an exact birth time and place, so they are left out rather than guessed.

What a Mars retrograde actually is (and why you haven't had one since 2025)

The astronomy is the easy part. Mars does not reverse. It appears to, because we watch it from a planet that overtakes it on the inside track. Earth laps Mars roughly every 26 months, and for about eleven weeks either side of the overtaking — while our line of sight swings past — the red planet seems to back up through the zodiac. Draw its position against the fixed stars every night for a year and you get a loop: forward, slow, stop, backwards, slow, stop, forward. Every planet outside Earth's orbit draws one. Mars's is the one you can see with the naked eye — at February's opposition it outshines every star in the sky.

The numbers for this particular loop: Mars backs up from 10°25′ Virgo to 20°55′ Leo — ten degrees of Virgo and the last nine and a half of Leo, nineteen and a half degrees of sky in total — over 80 days, 23 hours and 23 minutes. At its swiftest, in late February, it retreats about a third of a degree a day; amateur astronomers with binoculars can watch it shift against the stars over a single weekend. Those nineteen and a half degrees get walked three times between September and June: once forward in the autumn, once backward in the winter, once forward again in the spring. Anything that lives in that stretch of the zodiac — a planet in your chart, a project in your life — gets three readings: the draft, the edit, and the print.

Now the part that recalibrates the whole topic: this is the rarest personal-planet retrograde you will live through for a while. Mercury retrogrades three times a year — about 18% of people are born during one. Mars retrogrades once every 26 months or so, for about 9% of days (we clocked 9.3% between 2000 and 2030). Only Venus retrograde is rarer to be born under, at about 7%. The last Mars retrograde ended in February 2025, which means the planet of drive, temper and desire has run without interruption for almost two years. If your energy, your ambitions and your patience all feel due for a servicing in early 2027, that is not imagination. It is scheduled maintenance.

What the tradition actually says is narrower than the memes: Mars is the principle of assertion — energy, courage, anger, desire, the act of reaching for what you want. When it retrogrades, the assertion turns inward. External conquest stalls; internal accounting speeds up. Astrologers who work with this cycle treat it as a review period for anything that has been burning fuel: workouts, jobs, feuds, desires, the identity of being "the one who always…" Not a punishment. An audit — and, unlike Mercury's, an audit with a gym membership.

The two-act audit: Virgo first, then Leo

Most write-ups will call this "the Mars retrograde in Virgo," and for its first six weeks they will be right. But on February 21 Mars backs across the border into Leo, and everything the retrograde is asking changes register. Understanding the two acts is the whole trick of using this transit well.

Act I — the engine (January 10 to February 21, in Virgo). Mars in Virgo is the workhorse placement: routines, systems, health protocols, the daily machinery of effort. When Mars retrogrades here, the audit is about how you have been running. The symptoms are usually physical before they are psychological: the afternoon energy dip that becomes an afternoon collapse, the training program that stalls two weeks in, the feeling of being busy from morning to night without moving an inch. Virgo's perfectionism can sour during this act — into criticism of the self first, then of everyone within range. The remedy the sky seems to be recommending is almost comically Virgoan: resume the program you abandoned (Mars retrograde favours resuming over beginning — the abandoned gym block, the half-built system, the language app with the 47-day streak that died in October), renegotiate the workload you have been silently absorbing, and fix the body before re-decorating the calendar. This is a deload, not a demotion.

The door (February 21). Mars backs into Leo at 13:48 UTC, and the audit changes its question. In Virgo it asked how you are running. In Leo it asks why.

Act II — the heart (February 21 to April 1, in Leo). Leo is Mars in the sign of desire, pride and joy: the house of what you want because you want it, not because it is efficient. Backing into it retrograde means the summer's fires come back for a second look. Mars passed through Leo once already — September 28 to November 25, 2026 — and whatever got lit then (creative projects, romances, bold announcements, the "finally going for it" plans) returns between late February and April for an honest edit. Whose applause was the work for? Which of your ambitions are actually yours, and which are borrowed — from parents, exes, an old identity you have outgrown? Mars retrograde in Leo is also, classically, the ex-with-unfinished-fire window: heat that was never properly extinguished has a way of flaring back up for a decision. The risk of this act is performing instead of creating — keeping the stage lit long after the play has changed. The gift is that by the April 1 station, you generally know which desires were load-bearing and which were decoration. What survives the edit gets the whole second half of 2027 to run.

The hinge week: February 17–21

Four days in the middle of February carry an unreasonable share of this retrograde's weather, and each of them is precise.

February 17 — Mars square Uranus (1:32 AM EST). The second of three squares to Uranus in Gemini (the set: December 4, February 17, May 29). This is the classic aspect of the impulsive break — quitting the job by text, ending the friendship over a joke, torching the routine that was "suffocating" you. Sometimes the break is genuinely overdue; Uranus is not always wrong. The rule of thumb during a Mars–Uranus square is to let the insight arrive and the detonation wait. If the thing still needs blowing up on February 22, blow it up on February 22. It will still burn.

February 19 — opposition (10:44 AM EST). Earth overtakes Mars on the inside track at 0°45′ Virgo — the exact midpoint of the retrograde and the moment of closest approach. Mars rises at sunset, sits overhead at midnight, and outshines everything in the sky but the Moon, Venus and Jupiter; it will not look this big or this bright again until 2029. Astrologically, an opposition is a face-off: the Sun (identity, the day) on one side of the sky at 0°45′ Pisces, Mars (desire, the night) on the other. Energy peaks the way a fever peaks — visibly. If Act I has been dragging, expect this week to feel like a switch. Then watch the sky that weekend; you earned the show.

February 20 — the eclipse beside it (6:25 PM EST). February's full Moon is a penumbral lunar eclipse at 2° Virgo — and it takes place with retrograde Mars under two degrees away at 0°14′ Virgo. The eclipsed Moon rises with Mars at its elbow, on the last evening of Mars's Virgo audit. We have not found a single guide that mentions this. Eclipses are cover-the-basics weather: no big launches, no dramatic declarations that day. But if you want one image that captures this entire retrograde — the Moon going slightly dark in the sign of work, with the red planet of effort sitting right beside it, both about to slip back into Leo — that is the image.

February 21 — the door (8:48 AM EST). Mars backs into Leo. Act II begins.

Two more pressure points bookend the act. Mercury is retrograde from February 9 to March 3 (5°58′ Pisces back to 20°55′ Aquarius), overlapping the hinge week almost exactly — for three weeks in the middle of the Mars audit, words are under review at the same time as will, so expect conversations that circle, contracts that need a second draft, and the strong temptation to send the 1 AM message. Our advice on that last one is in the Mercury guide. And on March 19, Venus opposes Mars across 21°58′ Aquarius–Leo — the relationship checkpoint of the season, when "who wants what, and how much" gets asked out loud between people who have been politely not asking. That conversation goes better had than avoided; the retrograde is not asking idly.

The Jupiter relay: two handshakes in Leo

Here is the part of the 2026–27 winter that no one else is telling you, because it needs both planets computed at once: this Mars retrograde does not happen alone. It happens inside Jupiter's, in the same sign, on a schedule.

The first handshake: November 16, 2026, 08:23 UTC, at 25°55′ Leo. While both planets are still direct — and both already inside their pre-retrograde shadows (Jupiter's opened September 17, Mars's on November 5) — Mars catches Jupiter and passes it in Leo. In traditional astrology a Mars–Jupiter conjunction is the classic "bold move approved" aspect: energy and luck in the same degree. Whatever you launched or committed to in mid-November carries that signature — and carries it straight into the review, because…

The winter is a relay. Venus finished her retrograde on November 14 (the guide). Jupiter stations retrograde on December 13 at 27°03′ Leo. Mars follows on January 10 at 10°25′ Virgo. From mid-January to early April, the planet of beliefs and the planet of drive are both in review at once — and between February 21 and April 1, both are operating in Leo, re-walking the same degrees they toasted at the November handshake. The growth you announced in November gets asked, by February, whether it was real. Mars descends to 20°55′ Leo; Jupiter, retreating more slowly ahead of it, stops at 17°01′. They never quite meet again during the retrograde — the second handshake waits for direct motion — which is the sky's way of saying the approval is not cancelled, only deferred to the spring.

The twin stations. Mars stations direct on April 1 at 20°55′ Leo. Twelve days later, Jupiter stations direct on April 13 at 17°01′ Leo — less than four degrees apart in the same sign. Two planets that spent the winter in review turn around a week and a half from each other, and from April 13 to May 14 (when Mars re-enters Virgo with its corrections finished) everything that was audited — beliefs, plans, desires, work — moves again, together, forward, in the sign of the heart. That four-week window is the cleanest launch corridor of the first half of 2027. If something you edited all winter is ready, that is when you stop editing. The full anatomy of Jupiter's half of the relay — the Saturn trine folded around its direct station, the 2014–15 echo, its own checker — is in the Jupiter guide.

The rehearsal: December 2024 – February 2025

Mars retrogrades every 26 months or so, which means you have a rehearsal for this one, and it is recent. The last Mars retrograde ran December 6, 2024 (station at 6° Leo) to February 23, 2025 (direct at 17°01′ Cancer) — our ephemeris matches the published direct station to the arc-minute. Its shape was the mirror of this one's: it started in Leo and backed out of the sign into Cancer; this one starts in Virgo and backs into Leo. The two consecutive retrogrades form a question asked twice at the same door.

The practical exercise: think back to December 2024 through February 2025. What project did you restart, stall, or abandon? Whose anger — yours or someone else's — came back for round two? What did you quit in a hurry that you later had to re-do properly? Whatever house Leo occupies in your chart (the table below) received a test in early 2025; it receives the exam in early 2027. And for readers with planets in the last ten degrees of Leo or the first ten of Virgo, the two cycles rhyme directly: the thing that flared in the winter of 2024–25 gets its sequel, and its verdict, between January and April 2027.

Where it lands: the two-house guide for your rising sign

Because the retrograde crosses a sign border, it occupies two houses for every rising sign — an early chapter and a late chapter. Find your rising sign (whole-sign houses throughout; if you use quadrant houses, expect the occasional one-house shift). Act I is the Virgo house from January 10 to February 21; Act II is the Leo house from February 21 to April 1.

Three risings get special mention. Leo rising hosts Act II in the first house: the retrograde ends as a personal re-set — body, identity, direction — and late-degree Leo risings (born with the ascendant after roughly 20° Leo) will feel it in the marrow. Virgo rising hosts Act I in the first house: the energy audit is about you, your stamina and your standards, before it retreats into the twelfth to ask you to sleep. And Aries and Scorpio risings have Mars as chart ruler: for you, every Mars retrograde is a ruler-transit — the planet steering your whole chart goes in for service, and energy, temper and direction are exactly what get reviewed. Scorpio risings get the added twist of the review running through their 10th and 11th houses: career and community, publicly. (Mars also rules Aries itself — if you have planets in early Aries, note that the zone squares them: and Saturn is holding the door in Aries all through this.)

Born with Mars retrograde

About 9.3% of all days between 2000 and 2030 have Mars retrograde — roughly one person in eleven. If that is you, the classic reading is not the internet's version (a "cursed" Mars, whatever that means). The older, saner tradition describes a will that idles before it ignites: anger that takes the scenic route to expression, desire that needs to be re-discovered before it can be acted on, and a particular pattern of late determination — the person who was told they lacked drive and then, at 30 or 45, outworked every early starter in the room. Retrograde Mars in a birth chart is often described as a engine that warms up slowly and then holds its temperature better than anyone else's. The last birth windows were December 6, 2024 – February 23, 2025; the next is January 10 – April 1, 2027. The checker above will tell you in five seconds — and if you were born with Venus or Mercury retrograde instead, it will point you to those guides too.

How to use the season: what to do, what to hold

Do:

  • Resume things. The abandoned training block, the half-finished manuscript, the negotiation you tabled in October. Mars retrograde rewards re-starting with an advantage that direct motion never offers: the reps are already in the tank.
  • Settle the old score properly. The conflict that "ended" by exhaustion rather than agreement tends to resurface here. The point of the return is a real settlement — an apology, a renegotiation, a clean ending — not a rematch. Mars retrograde is excellent at closure and terrible at revenge.
  • Take the deload before your body takes it for you. If you train, program a deliberate reduction across late January and February rather than waiting for the February dip to enforce one. If you don't train, sleep like you do.
  • Watch February 19. Closest, biggest, brightest Mars until 2029. Rise at sunset. It is the best free astronomy of the season.
  • Edit the summer's work. Whatever you launched in the first Leo pass (September 28 – November 25), the winter is its second draft. Revision now beats re-launching later from scratch.

Hold (until after the April stations, where possible):

  • Brand-new wars. Lawsuits, confrontations, the scorched-earth email. If the fight can be scheduled for late April, schedule it for late April. (If it cannot, fight it tired — that has also been done.)
  • The big launch. Anything needing maximum immediate thrust — a business, a rebrand, a public debut — fares better in the April 13 – May 14 window, after both stations, than in January. If you must launch inside the retrograde, treat it explicitly as v1 and pre-announce the improvements; that framing is honest and, during Mars Rx, usually accurate.
  • Impulsive exits. Especially around December 4, February 17 and May 29 (the three Mars–Uranus squares): the resignation-by-text window. Let the insight land; let the detonation wait a week.
  • First offers and 1 AM messages. During the Mercury overlap (February 9 – March 3), words are as retrograde as will. Re-read, re-draft, sleep, re-send.

And the question everyone actually asks — elective surgery. The old rule says avoid cutting during Mars retrograde, Mars being the planet of incisions and inflammation. Our honest read: there is no data for the rule, and urgent surgery has never once waited for an ephemeris. The practical version we can defend: don't schedule anything elective in the days around a station (January 10, April 1) or the hinge week if you can choose, build extra recovery time into any plan made for the window, and notice that the season's real physiological risk is arriving at the operating table already depleted by a winter that has been quietly asking you to rest. That is a scheduling problem, not a cosmological one — and it is solvable.

After it is over — and the next one, in 2029

The exits are staggered, and worth calendaring. Mars stations direct on April 1 — personal energy first. Jupiter follows on April 13 — expansion second; the April 13 – May 14 corridor is the window we would book anything that has been edited all winter. Mars re-enters Virgo on May 14, carrying the corrected version of the work back to the workshop. The post-shadow closes on June 8, and anything launched inside the window gets its first honest stress-test in the weeks after. If you want the one-sentence version of this entire article: January is for resuming, February is for the dip and the door, March is for the honest conversation, April is for the relaunch.

After that, the calendar thins out. The next Mars retrograde runs February 14 – May 5, 2029, from 13°54′ Libra back to 24°54′ Virgo — one sign later, the cycle marching on. And here is the quiet headline for Leo placements: after April 2027, Mars will not be retrograde in Leo again until December 2041 – March 2042 — fifteen years away. This winter is the last Leo review of your decade-and-a-half. The sign that gets audited twice (it hosted the start of the 2024–25 retrograde and hosts the end of this one) then hands the torch to Virgo and Libra — and gets, as a parting gift, the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 at 10° Leo, the longest totality over land this century. The sign's year ends with the sky applauding, which is very on-brand for Leo.

Frequently asked questions

When exactly does Mars turn retrograde in 2027?

January 10, 2027, at 13:41 UTC, at 10°25′ Virgo — 8:41 AM in New York, 1:41 PM in London, 2:41 PM in Berlin. Unlike Jupiter's December 2026 station, there is no date controversy: January 10 is the calendar date everywhere in the Americas, Europe, Africa and most of Asia; only far-eastern Australia and the Pacific cross into January 11, in the very early morning.

When does Mars retrograde end, and when do things go back to normal?

Mars stations direct on April 1, 2027, at 13:04 UTC (9:04 AM EDT) at 20°55′ Leo. But "normal" returns in stages: Jupiter stations direct twelve days later on April 13, Mars re-enters Virgo on May 14, and the post-retrograde shadow — the stretch where Mars re-covers the audited degrees at full speed — closes on June 8. New starts conceived during the retrograde are best launched after April 13 and stress-tested after June 8.

How long is this Mars retrograde?

80 days, 23 hours and 23 minutes — 37 minutes short of 81 days. The full cycle, pre-shadow to post-shadow, runs 215 days: November 5, 2026 to June 8, 2027.

Why does the retrograde go back into Leo — and what changes when it does?

Mars retrogrades always re-cross degrees it recently walked; this loop begins at 10°25′ Virgo and retreats nineteen and a half degrees, crossing back into Leo on February 21, 2027 (13:48 UTC). The first six weeks (Virgo) audit the machinery — routines, work, health, effort. The last six weeks (Leo) audit the motive — desire, pride, creativity, whose life the effort is for. Most people feel the second half more vividly, and the ending of the retrograde, on 20°55′ Leo, is a Leo ending.

Is Mars retrograde bad?

No. It is a scheduled review, not an outage. Mars is retrograde about 9% of the time (9.3% of days between 2000 and 2030), so roughly one person in eleven was born during one, and two years have passed without any Mars retrograde at all. The honest risks are specific and manageable: energy dips (the February opposition week especially), reopened conflicts, and impulsive exits around the three Mars–Uranus squares (December 4, February 17, May 29). The honest upsides: finishing, resuming, renegotiating and resting all work better under this transit than under almost any other.

Who feels Mars retrograde the most?

People with natal planets between 20°55′ Leo and 10°25′ Virgo — or in square (late Taurus–early Gemini, late Scorpio–early Sagittarius) or opposition (late Aquarius–early Pisces) to that stretch. Then the risings: Leo (Act II in the 1st house), Virgo (Act I in the 1st house), and Aries and Scorpio (Mars rules the chart). The checker above gives you the verdict, with dates, in five seconds.

Does Mars retrograde bring back an ex?

It can bring back unfinished business — that part of the folklore is earned. Mars retrograde reliably resurfaces heat that was never properly extinguished: anger, attraction, conflicts that "ended" by exhaustion. What it does not do is decide for you. The point of the return, especially in the Leo act (February 21 – April 1) and around the Venus–Mars opposition of March 19, is a real decision — resume properly, or close it properly. Re-igniting something just because the flame came back is how people end up in the 2029 retrograde having the same conversation.

Can I start a new job, business or training program during Mars retrograde?

If it can wait for the April 13 – May 14, 2027 window, let it — both Mars and Jupiter are direct by then and the corridor is the cleanest of the first half of the year. If it cannot wait, start, and plan a deliberate second draft: the honest framing for anything begun between January 10 and April 1 is "version one, revisions scheduled." Resuming what you already began — the old program, the tabled negotiation — is not merely safe during Mars retrograde; it is the transit's home turf.

What is the best thing to do during Mars retrograde?

Resume, finish, settle and rest — in that order of drama. Concretely: restart the abandoned training block, close the argument that ended by exhaustion, take a deliberate deload across late January and February, and mark February 19 on the calendar, when Mars reaches opposition and becomes the biggest and brightest object in the night sky until 2029.

When is the next Mars retrograde, and when is the next one in Leo?

The next Mars retrograde runs February 14 – May 5, 2029, from 13°54′ Libra back to 24°54′ Virgo. The next Mars retrograde in Leo is not until December 28, 2041 – March 18, 2042 — fifteen years after this one.

Method: all positions and times computed with our Keplerian ephemeris (JPL/Standish elements, 1800–2050, tropical zodiac, UTC), cross-validated three ways: the February 19, 2027 opposition lands at 0°45′ Virgo against Zodiscope's published 0°46′ (one arc-minute apart); both sign ingresses match Café Astrology's published Mars-in-Leo and Mars-in-Virgo dates to the day; and the Jupiter stations quoted here match our Jupiter guide's computations to the minute. The February 20 eclipse type and timing come from published eclipse canons; the Moon's degree (2°05′ Virgo) and Mars's position beside it (0°14′ Virgo) are our own computation, accurate to a few arc-minutes. For the 2024–25 cycle, the December 6 station date follows published ephemerides; our model's direct station matches theirs to the arc-minute. Whole-sign houses throughout. Eastern conversions account for the November 1, 2026 and March 14, 2027 clock changes.
