Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio (October 24 – November 13, 2026): Every Date to the Minute, the Venus Overlap, and a Checker for Your Own Chart
Mercury stations retrograde at 20°58′ Scorpio on October 24, 2026 and turns direct at 5°01′ Scorpio on November 13, overlapping Venus retrograde the whole way. Shadow periods, the November 4 cazimi, the storm window, all 2026 and 2027 dates, a rising-sign guide, and a free calculator that checks you
The short version
- Mercury is retrograde from October 24 to November 13, 2026, entirely in Scorpio. It stops at 20°58′ Scorpio on October 24 (07:11 UTC — 3:11 AM in New York) and turns direct at 5°01′ Scorpio on November 13 (15:51 UTC — 10:51 AM in New York). It never changes sign.
- The whole cycle is longer than those three weeks: the pre-retrograde shadow starts October 4, the slow "storm" window runs October 17 – November 17, and the post-retrograde shadow ends November 30.
- Venus is retrograde at the same time. From October 24 to November 13 both planets are backwards in Scorpio, and they station direct on the same day, nine hours apart. Details in the Venus retrograde guide.
- The midpoint is the inferior conjunction with the Sun on November 4 at 12°10′ Scorpio (the "cazimi"), the day the whole thing quietly flips from evening star to morning star.
- If your Sun, Mercury or any planet sits between 5° and 21° Scorpio (or in the same degrees of Taurus, Leo or Aquarius), this one is personal. The calculator below checks it in five seconds, tells you whether you were born with Mercury retrograde, and which of Rudhyar's four Mercury types you are.
- This is the third of three 2026 retrogrades that each stayed inside a single water sign — Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio. The last time Mercury did a whole retrograde inside Scorpio was October 31 – November 20, 2019. That is your rehearsal.
Mercury walked into Scorpio this morning.
Not that anyone noticed. Sign changes for the fastest planet happen about every three weeks and rarely make the news. This one is worth a note in the calendar, though, because Mercury is not going to leave. It entered Scorpio at 11:40 UTC on September 30 and does not enter Sagittarius until December 6: sixty-seven days in a sign it usually crosses in two or three weeks. Somewhere in the middle of that long stay, between October 24 and November 13, it turns around and goes backwards. That is the retrograde everybody will be talking about by Halloween.
Mercury retrograde is the one piece of astrology that has escaped into the general culture, which is exactly why it is so badly understood. It is blamed for everything and explained by almost nobody. So this guide does the unglamorous thing: it gives you the actual dates, computed to the minute in UTC and converted to US Eastern (including the awkward clock change on November 1), it explains what the shadow and the storm and the cazimi are, and it hands you a calculator that checks your own chart against the exact degrees instead of asking you to squint at a table. Then we get to what to do about it.

Two things jump out of that table. First, the retrograde proper is only 20 days and 9 hours — short even by Mercury's standards — but the full story, shadow to shadow, is eight weeks. Second, look at how crowded October 24 is: the Sun meets Venus at 03:32 UTC and Mercury stations at 07:11. Two inner-planet turning points in one four-hour window, both in the first degrees of Scorpio's season. If you want one date to circle, it is that one.
Does this retrograde touch your chart? (and were you born with Mercury retrograde?)
Enter your birth date. The time and time zone only matter if you were born within a few hours of Mercury changing sign or direction, so don't worry if you don't know them. Nothing is stored, nothing is emailed.
What it checks: your natal Mercury (position, direct or retrograde, stationary or not, morning star or evening star, cazimi or not), your natal Venus as a bonus, and whether any planet from the Sun to Pluto sits inside the retrograde zone — 5°01′ to 20°58′ Scorpio — or squares or opposes it, with a 2° orb. For every contact it gives you the exact dates Mercury crosses that degree, usually three of them. The Moon and Ascendant need an exact birth time and place, so they are left out rather than guessed.
What a Mercury retrograde actually is
Mercury orbits the Sun in 88 days; we take 365. Every 116 days or so, on average, Mercury laps us on the inside, and for about three weeks around that moment it appears — from our moving viewpoint — to drift backwards against the stars. Nothing reverses. It is the same effect as the slower train seeming to roll backwards when yours overtakes it. But astrology has never been about what planets do; it is about what they look like from here, and from here Mercury spends roughly 18% of its life going the wrong way. Three times most years, occasionally four.
A few words that get thrown around loosely, defined properly:
- Station. The moment Mercury's apparent motion is exactly zero, as it changes direction. There are two per cycle: the retrograde station (October 24) and the direct station (November 13). Astrologers treat stations as the loudest days of the cycle, and the hours around them as the time when the planet is "strongest" for good or ill. Mercury sits within a degree of its station for about four days either side.
- Shadow. The stretch of zodiac Mercury covers three times: forward, backward, forward again. This cycle it is 5°01′ to 20°58′ Scorpio. The pre-retrograde shadow runs from October 4, when Mercury first reaches 5°01′, to the station on October 24; the post-retrograde shadow runs from November 13 to November 30, when it finally clears 20°58′. The traditional reading: what shows up in the pre-shadow is the subject of the retrograde; the retrograde is the rewrite; the post-shadow is the clean copy.
- Storm. A more recent term for the window in which Mercury is moving unusually slowly, typically defined as under 40 arcminutes a day (its normal pace is well over a degree). By that definition the storm runs from October 17 to November 17. It is a better predictor of the "everything is slow and slightly wrong" feeling than the retrograde dates themselves, because a planet crawling forward at 10′ a day is, for practical purposes, still stopped.
- Inferior conjunction, or cazimi. The exact middle of the retrograde, when Mercury passes directly between Earth and the Sun: November 4 at 14:20 UTC, 12°10′ Scorpio. Before it, Mercury is an evening star, setting after the Sun; after it, a morning star, rising before dawn. Traditional astrology calls a planet within 17 arcminutes of the Sun's centre cazimi, "in the heart of the Sun", and treats it as the one bright spot in an otherwise weakened condition — the moment of clarity in the middle of the muddle. Modern astrologers use the day for the decisive realisation, the honest conversation, the signature you genuinely cannot postpone.
The water year: why 2026 is unusual, and what 2019 can tell you
Mercury's retrogrades do not scatter randomly around the zodiac. Because of the way its 116-day cycle beats against our year, the three retrogrades of any given year fall roughly 120° apart — which is why they tend to land in the three signs of a single element — and the whole pattern slides slowly backwards through the zodiac, spending about two years in each element before slipping into the previous one. 2021 was an air year (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra). 2023 was earth (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo). 2024 and early 2025 were fire. And 2026 is water: Pisces in February–March, Cancer in June–July, Scorpio now.
What makes 2026 stand out is that all three retrogrades stayed inside their sign from station to station. That is not rare in itself — a little over half of all cycles do it — but three in a row with no sign-hopping, all in one element, gives the year a coherent theme, and the theme of water is emotional information: what you feel, what you remember, what you have not said. February's Pisces retrograde was about the vague and the unfinished; July's Cancer one about family and home; the Scorpio one is about the things that were deliberately not said. Secrets, debts, shared money, passwords, the conversation that was closed too early.
By 2027 the pattern starts to slide back into air: February 9 – March 3 begins in Pisces and ends in Aquarius; June 10 – July 4 goes Cancer to Gemini; October 7 – 28 starts at 4°55′ Scorpio and ends at 19°18′ Libra. So next autumn's retrograde begins almost exactly where this one ends. Astrology is fond of that kind of echo.
For a rehearsal, look at October 31 – November 20, 2019, the last time Mercury did an entire retrograde inside Scorpio (27°38′ back to 11°35′). Within the whole span of 2014 to 2036, 2019 and 2026 are the only two. The degrees are different — this one sits lower in the sign — but the sign, the season and the mood are the same. If you kept a diary in November 2019, the first week of it is worth re-reading. For anyone with the sense that a specific old subject is coming back around: it probably is, and it is probably the one from then.
The Venus overlap: two retrogrades in one sign
The thing that makes this cycle genuinely different from an ordinary Mercury retrograde is company. Venus stationed retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio on October 3, and although it backs into Libra on October 25, the two retrogrades run together from October 24 until both planets station direct on November 13 — Mercury at 10:51 in the morning, New York time, Venus at 7:24 that evening. A double retrograde of the two personal planets is not exotic (it happens most years somewhere), but a double station on one calendar day is worth noticing, and having Mercury turn around in the very degrees Venus covered three weeks earlier is what gives the autumn its layered, back-and-back-again feel.
There are three dates where the two actually meet or hand off:
- October 6–7 (00:01 UTC on the 7th, 8:01 PM Eastern on the 6th): Mercury, still direct and moving fast, catches Venus, already retrograde, at 8°13′ Scorpio. First pass of a conversation about money or love that will not be finished in one sitting. Mercury will be back at this degree on November 7–8, retrograde and without Venus, and a third time on November 20.
- October 24: the Sun–Venus inferior conjunction at 03:32 UTC, then Mercury's station at 07:11. Venus at the heart of the Sun and Mercury standing still, within four hours, in the first degree of Scorpio season. This is the loudest day of the autumn.
- November 13: both stations. The days on either side are when reversals of reversals happen — the decision that was cancelled comes back; the person who went quiet writes; the price that was withdrawn is offered again.
The practical implication of the overlap is simple: the usual Mercury-retrograde caution about signatures and agreements applies doubly to agreements about money and relationships. A contract about a website can be redone. A joint bank account or a prenuptial agreement drafted under two retrograde planets in Scorpio is the kind of thing astrologers of every tradition would tell you to date after November 13, or after November 30 if the choice is yours. The Venus retrograde guide covers that side of the story, including its own calculator.
The pressure points
Beyond the stations, Mercury makes remarkably few exact aspects during this cycle — the outer planets are simply not where it is going. That is unusual and, frankly, a relief. The dates that matter:
- October 4 — shadow begins (5°01′ Scorpio). Whatever you are dealing with on the first weekend of October is the syllabus. Take notes; you will need them in mid-November.
- October 7 — Mercury conjunct Venus (8°13′ Scorpio). See above. The opening line of the term's main conversation.
- October 17 — storm begins. Mercury drops below 40′ a day. From here to the station, expect the pre-retrograde symptoms that people always report a week "early": the delayed reply, the double-booked meeting, the file that will not open.
- October 24 — station retrograde (20°58′ Scorpio), four hours after the Sun–Venus conjunction. Mercury is standing still in the third decan of Scorpio, an evening star 20° east of the Sun. This is the day misunderstandings are born. Say less, write down more, and do not send anything that cannot be unsent.
- October 26 — Full Moon at 2°45′ Taurus. The Moon opposes the Scorpio Sun and Venus in the first degrees of the sign two days after the double turning point. Full Moons illuminate; this one lights up whatever the retrogrades just reopened, on the axis of money and worth.
- October 30 — Mercury square Mars (17°58′ Scorpio / Leo). The single exact hard aspect of the whole retrograde, and it lands on the Friday before Halloween. Retrograde Mercury squaring Mars is the classic signature for the message sent in anger, the argument that escalates by text, and the mechanical failure at the worst moment. Drive carefully, argue in person, and if it is a fixed sign matter (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius around 16°–20°), let it wait.
- November 4 — inferior conjunction / cazimi (12°10′ Scorpio). Mercury is moving backwards at its fastest, 1°18′ a day, right through the Sun. The midpoint of the retrograde and, for the traditionalists, its one dignified hour. Venus sextiles Jupiter the same morning. If you are going to have the conversation, this is the day the other person is most likely to hear it.
- November 9 — New Moon at 16°53′ Scorpio. The Scorpio New Moon with Mercury retrograde at 6°51′ in the same sign. New beginnings under a retrograde Mercury tend to be restarts of old projects rather than genuinely new ones. That is fine. Restart the old project.
- November 13 — station direct (5°01′ Scorpio), then Venus station direct. The turn. Mercury is now a morning star, 16° west of the Sun. Things that were stuck start to move over the following week, but see the next entry.
- November 17 — storm ends. Mercury back above 40′ a day. The realistic "it's over" date for anyone who cares about how it feels rather than the technical direction.
- November 30 — shadow ends (20°58′ Scorpio). Mercury clears the station degree, and the subject of the last eight weeks can finally be filed. December 6 it enters Sagittarius and changes the subject entirely.
One non-event worth mentioning: Mercury stations direct at 5°01′ Scorpio, which is just under two degrees from an exact square to Pluto at 3° Aquarius. It never perfects the square, but it turns around in its shadow. For anyone with planets at 3°–5° of the fixed signs, the November 13 station will feel like a Pluto contact — heavier, more final — even though the ephemeris will not list one.
Your rising sign: the house being audited
Because the whole retrograde stays in Scorpio, it stays in one house of your chart from shadow to shadow, which makes the rising-sign reading unusually clean. Whole-sign houses; if you use Placidus the house can differ by one. If you only know your Sun sign, read that instead — it will be right more often than you would think, and the calculator above can make it exact.
| Rising (or Sun) sign | House | What is under review, October 4 – November 30 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8th | Shared money, debts, taxes, inheritances, passwords, the partner's finances. The retrograde most likely to surface a financial detail someone kept quiet. Check statements; change passwords after November 13, not before. |
| Taurus | 7th | The partner, the client, the contract. Negotiations reopen, an ex or a former business partner reappears, terms that seemed agreed need rewording. Talk it through; sign it later. |
| Gemini | 6th | Work systems, schedules, health appointments, colleagues. Mercury rules your chart, so every retrograde is personal; this one exposes the process that was never actually working. Fix it, don't paper over it. |
| Cancer | 5th | Romance, children, creative work. Texts to a crush misfire; an old flame writes; a creative project abandoned in 2019 asks to be finished. Say yes to the project, maybe to the flame. |
| Leo | 4th | Home and family. Leases, deeds, repairs, the conversation with a parent that keeps restarting. Old family information surfaces. With Mars in your sign squaring Mercury on October 30, keep the household argument short. |
| Virgo | 3rd | Mercury's own house and your ruling planet: messages, siblings, neighbours, the commute, the devices. The most literal retrograde on this list — back up the phone, reread the email, leave early for the train. Twice. |
| Libra | 2nd | Money you earn and own. Invoices, prices, pay, a subscription you forgot. Venus (your ruler) is retrograde in your own sign for most of the same weeks, so this is a genuine financial review, not a scare. Re-check every number. |
| Scorpio | 1st | You. How you speak, how you are read, the name on the form, the decision about how you want to present yourself. A month of re-explaining yourself and changing your mind about it. Uncomfortable and useful in equal measure. |
| Sagittarius | 12th | The private house: secrets, sleep, therapy, the unsaid. Quiet on the outside, busy inside. Often the most productive placement of all — the retrograde does its work in dreams and long walks and you emerge in December knowing something. |
| Capricorn | 11th | Friends, groups, networks, the platforms you depend on. A friendship from another chapter wants a conversation; a group chat implodes and reforms; the app changes its terms. Renew old alliances, don't launch new ones. |
| Aquarius | 10th | Career and reputation. The boss, the job title, the public statement. An old professional contact reappears with news; a decision about direction is reopened at the top. With Pluto in your sign, the November 13 station will feel decisive. |
| Pisces | 9th | Travel, visas, courses, publishing, legal matters. Reconfirm anything with a date on it, expect the itinerary to change once, and treat the retrograde as the editing pass on whatever you are writing or studying. |
What to do, what to put off, and the contract question
The folk wisdom says: don't sign, don't buy electronics, don't travel, don't start anything. Taken literally that would remove three weeks from every four months, which is absurd, and most working astrologers do not live that way. The more useful version is a distinction between new and re-. Mercury retrograde is bad at new — new contracts, new devices, new plans made with strangers — and unusually good at anything beginning with re: review, revise, repair, reconnect, research, reconsider, rest. The Scorpio flavour adds: investigate, audit, and say the thing that was left unsaid.
On the specific question everyone asks — can I sign a contract? — the honest answer has three parts. If the date is not yours to choose, sign it and read it twice; astrology has never asked anyone to lose a job over a transit. If the date is yours to choose and the agreement is about money, property or a relationship, the cleanest dates are after November 13 (technical), after November 17 (storm), or after November 30 (thorough), and this autumn the Venus retrograde makes that advice stronger than usual. And if you must sign inside the window, the traditional pick is November 4, the cazimi, when Mercury is "in the heart of the Sun" and its judgment is considered clearest.
A short, unmystical checklist for this particular retrograde, given the sign:
- Before October 17: back up your phone and laptop; renew anything expiring in November; book travel for the holidays now if you can; download the statements for any shared account.
- October 17 – November 17: reread before sending; confirm meetings the morning of; do not change passwords, banks or phone carriers unless forced; expect to hear from at least one person from 2019.
- The three re-words for Scorpio: research (the thing you were told and did not check), reconcile (the account, and possibly the person), release (the grudge that costs more to carry than it would to set down).
- After November 30: file it. Whatever the last eight weeks were about, it is done. Sagittarius Mercury from December 6 will not want to discuss it again.
Born with Mercury retrograde (and the four Mercury types)
About one person in five was born while Mercury was retrograde. The calculator above tells you in a second, but the popular description is recognisable enough that many of them already know: a mind that takes information in sideways, thinks before it speaks (and sometimes long after), dislikes being rushed to an answer, and is often better on the page than out loud. The stereotype that natal Mercury retrograde means "bad at communicating" does not survive contact with the people who have it; a striking number are writers, editors, researchers and the person in the meeting who says nothing for forty minutes and then the one thing that matters.
The other thing they report, consistently, is that transiting Mercury retrogrades bother them less. That is not a superstition with a mechanism behind it, but it is an observation old enough to be worth passing on: if you were born with the software running backwards, everyone else's three weeks of confusion is your home turf.
There is a subtler classification that deserves to be better known. Dane Rudhyar pointed out, in a scheme later astrologers have filled in, that Mercury is always either ahead of the Sun in the sky — rising before it, a morning star — or behind it, setting after it, an evening star, and that combining this with direction gives four Mercury types. The calculator reports yours.
- Morning star, direct (Rudhyar's Promethean): quick, forward-leaning, speaks while the thought is still forming and thinks by talking. The largest group.
- Morning star, retrograde: the intuitive leaper. Reaches conclusions ahead of the evidence and then works backwards to explain them; often right, rarely able to say why.
- Evening star, direct (Epimethean): reflective and deliberate. Understands things fully once they have happened; the careful drafter and the good witness.
- Evening star, retrograde: the deepest reviewer. Slow to speak, difficult to fool, inclined to reopen a question everyone else considered closed, and usually vindicated for it.
Rarer still: Mercury stationary at birth, within about a day of turning around (the calculator flags it below 0.12° a day), which astrologers have long read as a concentrated, one-track mind; and Mercury cazimi, within 17 arcminutes of the Sun, which happens for a few hours around each conjunction and is read as unusual clarity of purpose. If you were born on November 4 this year, or on March 7 or July 13, 2026, you may want to check.

FAQ
When exactly is Mercury retrograde in October 2026?
From October 24, 2026 (station at 07:11 UTC, 3:11 AM Eastern, at 20°58′ Scorpio) to November 13, 2026 (station at 15:51 UTC, 10:51 AM Eastern, at 5°01′ Scorpio). The pre-retrograde shadow began October 4 and the post-retrograde shadow ends November 30.
Does Mercury change signs during this retrograde?
No. It is entirely in Scorpio, from 20°58′ back to 5°01′. Mercury entered Scorpio on September 30 and does not leave for Sagittarius until December 6, 2026, an unusually long 67-day stay.
What are the Mercury retrograde shadow dates for October–November 2026?
The pre-shadow runs October 4 – October 24 (Mercury first crossing 5°01′ Scorpio, the degree it will later turn direct at). The post-shadow runs November 13 – November 30 (until Mercury gets back to 20°58′ Scorpio, where it turned retrograde). The slower "storm" window, when Mercury moves under 40′ a day, is October 17 – November 17.
Is Venus retrograde at the same time as Mercury?
Yes. Venus is retrograde from October 3 to November 13/14, 2026, starting in Scorpio and finishing in Libra. From October 24 to November 13 both planets are retrograde, and they station direct on the same day: Mercury at 10:51 AM Eastern, Venus at 7:24 PM Eastern on November 13.
What is the cazimi or inferior conjunction on November 4?
It is the moment Mercury passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, at 14:20 UTC (9:20 AM Eastern) on November 4, 2026, at 12°10′ Scorpio. It marks the exact midpoint of the retrograde and the switch from evening star to morning star. Traditional astrology considers a planet within 17′ of the Sun to be "in the heart of the Sun" and unusually clear, so it is often chosen for the important conversation or decision that cannot wait until the retrograde ends.
Which signs are most affected by Mercury retrograde in Scorpio 2026?
Scorpio first, then the other fixed signs — Taurus (opposite), Leo and Aquarius (square) — especially anyone with planets between about 5° and 21° of those signs. Gemini and Virgo, the two signs Mercury rules, feel every Mercury retrograde more than most. The calculator on this page checks your actual planets rather than just your Sun sign.
What are all the Mercury retrograde dates in 2026?
February 26 – March 20 (22°34′ to 8°29′ Pisces); June 29 – July 23 (26°15′ to 16°18′ Cancer); October 24 – November 13 (20°58′ to 5°01′ Scorpio). All three stayed inside a single water sign.
When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?
February 9 – March 3, 2027 (5°58′ Pisces back to 20°55′ Aquarius); June 10 – July 4, 2027 (6°21′ Cancer back to 27°28′ Gemini); October 7 – 28, 2027 (4°55′ Scorpio back to 19°18′ Libra). Each starts in a water sign and ends in an air sign.
Can I sign a contract or buy a phone during Mercury retrograde?
You can, and most people do; the tradition says agreements made under retrograde Mercury tend to be revised later, not that they are doomed. If you can choose the date, astrologers would suggest after November 13 (or November 30 to be thorough); if you must sign inside the window, November 4 is the traditional pick. For electronics, the practical advice is simpler: keep the receipt and back up the old device first.
How do I know if I was born with Mercury retrograde?
Enter your birth date in the calculator on this page; it computes Mercury's position and speed at your birth and also tells you whether it was a morning or evening star. About 18% of people were born with Mercury retrograde. In the 2020–2030 table above, any birth between a "stations retrograde" and "stations direct" date qualifies; for other years, the calculator covers 1900 to 2049.
Method and sources
- All planetary positions are computed from the JPL/Standish approximate Keplerian elements (valid 1800–2050) with precession applied to give tropical longitudes of date; stations are found by bracketing the zero of apparent longitude speed to the minute. Validation against published ephemerides: the November 9, 2025 station computes to 6°51′ Sagittarius and the November 29, 2025 station to 20°42′ Scorpio (both match the published figures exactly); the August 5 and 28, 2024 stations to 4°06′ Virgo and 21°24′ Leo (exact); the October 24, 2026 station to 20°58′ Scorpio at 07:11 UTC (published: 20°58′–20°59′, 07:12 UTC) and the November 13 station to 5°01′ Scorpio (published 5°01′–5°02′).
- Lunations use a 60-term truncation of the Meeus lunar theory, accurate to a few minutes. Aspect and ingress times are good to about ±15 minutes; station times are quoted to the minute for consistency but are physically fuzzy, since Mercury is nearly motionless for many hours either side.
- US Eastern conversions use the IANA America/New_York rules: EDT (UTC−4) until 2:00 AM on November 1, 2026, EST (UTC−5) afterwards.
- "Storm" is defined here as apparent speed below 40 arcminutes per day; "cazimi" as within 17′ of the Sun's centre; "shadow" as the degree range between the two stations. Houses in the rising-sign table are whole-sign. The four Mercury types follow Dane Rudhyar's morning-star/evening-star (Promethean/Epimethean) scheme.
- Where we state a percentage (about 18% of births with Mercury retrograde, 7% with Venus retrograde) it is the fraction of time the planet spends retrograde, which is the same thing over a large enough population.
- This is astrology, not advice. Sign the contract, buy the phone, text the person from 2019 or don't, on your own judgment. We just do the maths.
